“..our sophomore group is one of our ‘rowdier’ groups, so I was a little nervous about their behavior, but they were engaged, participating, and hooked the entire time. When Fletcher was speaking, you could hear a pin drop on how focused they were! They were even talking about it in the halls and during lunch with their friends from other grade levels. It was phenomenal. We will absolutely want to make this an occurring assembly at OCHS!
I am so thankful for all of the work and organization that you all put into these assemblies. It was such a powerful and impactful time for our students, and I fully believe that they took away important messages. I talked about it with my husband in JCPS, and I think he may be sharing the word with his administration. I will talk highly of this assembly everywhere I go!”

I wanted to tell you that the assembly yesterday was a huge success with the students and staff.
I was very impressed with all of the people involved. They were super friendly, on task, and very organized.
Please remember us in the fall for the 25-26 school year. We were so sad that most of our high school missed out on the presentation.
Hi! I was at the Johnson County High School assembly today, I just wanted to say you are absolutely amazing! You are so strong, I cannot even begin to imagine what you went through. We have had several assemblies about that topic, but I have never ever been affected by those stories like I was by yours. You are the perfect person to be sharing, and I love that you demand respect. Please never stop doing what you’re doing!!! 🫶
Thank you so much for going to our school and telling us your story. I love how you’re still positive even after everything that has happened. You have such good advice for everything. Not everyone has neough courage to tell their story to people. So, I thought it was cool that you did. You seem like such a funny person. You have a crazy story. But somehow you act like nothing ever happened. I love how even after you got paralyzed that didn’t stop you from doing your dreams and what you love.
You are an amazing person.
As me and my peers listened to the presentation Tammy performed at our high school we learned about why it is important to speak up to not just risky drivers but to any sort of conflict that could hurt ourselves or others around us. The story brought many to understand the speaker’s points and views and I believe that everyone took something out of the address. Throughout Ms. Tammy’s presentation I learned the values of safe driving and its importance especially to student drives.
Hi, Sorry for the late response, end of the school year gets crazy! We all really enjoyed it. Some students had lunch with your crew before the presentation and really appreciated the extra time. Students volunteered to stay after to help clean and chat more. Because we are a smaller residential school sometimes we have the same kids for a year or two, however Steve said we could possibly schedule a different speaker if we wanted to offer another experience. The banner is hanging in our school house. The packet about teamwork and captain/leadership qualities is awesome, I plan on using that in my P.E. classes. I am reaching out to our English teachers to see if they can incorporate Steves book into their curriculum somehow. Some students have borrowed it to read already. Here are some emails I got from some students who attended!
Dear Mr. Cleaves,
I just wanted to let you know how much you sharing your story and talking with our students means to me. I graduated from this school and during my freshman year of college I lost my best friend in a car accident. I think this is one of the reasons that I decided to become a teacher. So I could make a difference in my students’ lives and explain to them the importance of vigilance while driving. Sharing your story here is extremely important, and it is inspiring me to be a better man and teacher.
Thank you for coming to visit us.
Best,
There are no words to describe how wonderful our day at school was yesterday.
David was an outstanding speaker – his humor, music, honesty, was all spot on.
Teachers were telling me this morning that yesterday was one of the best experiences in their 20 years of teaching. The students were still talking about it today, we have been able to have conversations about forgiveness, determination, will power, and decision making.
We look forward to working with you all in the future. We can not thank you all enough, please send our sincerest gratitude to your speakers, activity organizers and your sponsors.
On behalf of York High School, I would like to sincerely thank you for taking the time to reach out and introduce us to the Choices Matter Program.
The activities and presentation were both engaging and informative, and it left an impression on our students and staff.
We truly appreciate the effort your whole team put into sharing valuable insights and experiences. Your program’s message about the dangers of making choices that involve substance use was not only inspiring but also relevant to our student body. The students were so engaged and attentive during Chris’s speech (which speaks volumes!). His passion for the subject and his personal story were impactful.
Thank you again for your time and dedication to making a difference in our community. We hope to welcome you back to our school in the future!
On behalf of Mr. Stephenson and the entire Riverside Education Academy family, I want to express my sincere thanks for affording Riverside the opportunity to participate in the Choices Matter assembly. We cannot begin to tell you the profound effect this amazing program had on our students and staff. The commitment of Alliance and the Connecticut State Highway Department to students across the nation to make the right choices is greatly appreciated. Participating in the Choices Matter Program has been an invaluable opportunity or our school. We are forever grateful to you for the resources and support you provided. We are also indebted to Mr. Emt, J.J., and Jonathan for the outstanding presentation and their unwavering commitment to the Choices Matter program.
Thank you again for your generosity and leadership.
Warmly,
When reflecting on the story that Chris Sandy told, it made me at first feel distant from the situation, but the more I heard about his life, the more personal it became. When just looking at the facts on the drunk driving incident at first it made me sad but didn’t really connect to me since it feels like a crazy, out of reach scenario. When Mr. Sandy continued to tell his life story, it personalized the situation and made it feel more tangible and real. I can’t imagine having to live with something like that and coming out a better person so it was really inspirational. I think he spreads a very important and emotional message that can really change perspectives and views and hopefully keep people from making similar mistakes.
Just wanted to say thank you for coming to Angola High School on April 8, 2025. Cara did a traffic job with her presentation and I have received multiple compliments from student, teachers, parents and staff.
It was great having your assistance in reaching out to our kids and trying to make them understand that choices do matter.
This assembly is fitting in great with the mock crash we are having on April 15, 2025 and with both presentation maybe we can make a difference in kids lives and bring the rising number of traffic fatalities down.
I hope we can work together next year and bring you back to Angola High School for another great presentation.
Thank you,
Hello there, I just wanted to take a minute to say thank you. My son had prom this past weekend and we had all the talks with him. We told them different choices of how to get out of situations, as well as who he could call. He said that you helped him realize that he needs to stay his age and enjoy life and when he came home from prom a little after midnight, he said that there was alcohol at the after party and that’s when he decided to go home. When raising kids, I know it takes a village and thanks to you, you are part of our village and keeping my son safe as well as making good choices. Thank you so very much for coming to Saint Bernard High School.
